Abstract By Dani

In the fall of 2010, I proudly earned my Bachelor of Art and Design degree from Iowa State University. I grew up in West Des Moines, Iowa, where my dreams of becoming an artist took root early on. Art has been my passion from the very beginning.

Throughout my school years, art class was always my favorite. I remember sprinting to the art room during recess, eager to immerse myself in creativity. My intrigue with abstraction was sparked in the 6th grade, thanks to a project assigned by my art teacher. We were tasked with drawing various shapes, lines, and colors on paper to form an intricate design.

To my delight, my final piece was selected for display at the Des Moines Art Center that year. It was at this moment that my undeniable love for abstract art truly began.

In my sophomore year of high school, I enrolled in my first formal painting class and quickly discovered a profound and indescribable love for painting. This fueled a deep desire to create art. By my senior year, I was ready to take AP Art (Advanced Placement Art), a path made possible by the strong foundation I’d built through a variety of art classes throughout high school. As an artist, I chose to dedicate myself fully to painting.

After college, I spent three months in Switzerland, immersing myself in painting while traveling across Europe to learn more about its rich artistic traditions. In the summer and fall of 2013, I journeyed to New York City to experience the vibrant art scene firsthand. This invaluable experience allowed me to significantly expand my portfolio and reach new heights in my artistic career. Always in pursuit of new challenges and adventures, I decided to relocate back to Zurich, Switzerland, a vibrant hub for European art. Fueled by a blend of ambition and a stroke of luck, I had the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Art International Zurich exhibition.

When embarking on a new project, I eagerly dive in, allowing my creativity to take the lead. I’m always thrilled to start a new piece! I begin by repeatedly sketching across the canvas with my pencil, enjoying the exploration of emerging designs. Next, I intuitively decide which colors best complement each section and consider how they interact with one another. While I occasionally sketch different designs with thumbnails, I prefer immersing myself in the spontaneous process of creation. I thrive on the energy of the “unknown stage,” relishing the excitement of not knowing how the finished artwork will ultimately take shape.

My canvases consist of solid, bold, crisp colors. In order to get the purest concentration of color that I desire, I use multiple layers of paint. Throughout my years of painting, I have become very passionate about intense color use in my artwork. I believe that solid, bold colors create an extreme experience. I experiment with shapes and form while leveraging the contrast potential that each color has with one another. The end result is a marvelous explosion of magical hues and shapes.

In life, not one person thinks alike. For that reason, I chose to not title my artwork. I want each viewer to get what they, themselves, see out of the painting before them; not get distracted by what the title has to say.  I hope each of my viewers experience different feelings of emotion when they come into contact with my artwork. I want my viewers to build their own story of joy and excitement. Every time one of my viewers observes the same piece of artwork I want a new interpretation to unfold.tion, I set up my own studio in my apartment where I have all the tools to increase the number of pieces in my portfolio. In 2017, I had
